Trends in Ransomware and Identify Theft

March 27 | 1:00–2:50 PM ET | 2 CPEs | FOS: IT

According to Department of Homeland Security Ransomware is malicious software designed to deny across to computer systems or data. In a ransomware attack, systems and/or data are encrypted and a payment is required to decrypt. Paying the ransom does not guarantee a user will regain access to their systems or data and this information can be permanently lost.
According to Cloudwards:

  • Ransomware cost the world $20B in 2021 and the number is expected to rise to $265B by 2031.
  • In 2021, 37% of all business and organizations were hit by ransomware.
  • Out of all ransomware victims, 32% pay the ransom but only get 65% of their data back.
  • Only 57% of businesses are successful in recovering their data using a backup.

In addition to ransomware, identity theft continues to be a major cybersecurity risk in our country. According to Microsoft, 33% of citizens have experienced identity theft with another 15 million Americans becoming victims each year.

Come hear our panel of experts discuss emerging trends in ransomware and identify theft. We will also discuss resources offered to federal, state, and local agencies related to ransomware and identity theft. We will offer advice to help protect against ransomware and identity theft. We will wrap up with a specific discussion on whether an organization should pay the ransom or not.
